Summer is officially right around the corner and that means it’s time to finalize those summer plans of yours. Summer is without a doubt the best time of year to plan a road trip – with the windows rolled down, loud music and long stretches of road ahead of you, it’s the perfect situation to making lasting memories with friends or family. But before you hop in the car, make sure you take some time to get ready. When preparing a road trip, here are the 4 steps you need to take.

  1. Make a Plan

To make the most of your trip, sit down and plan the basics. Here are some questions to ask you:

  • Are you going solo or are family members or friends coming along?
  • How long will the trip be?
  • What car will you be using?
  • Where will you stay at night?
  • What is the budget for the trip?
  1. Pack the essentials

Having the right items packed can make all the difference on your trip. When you start packing, make sure you have these items in the bag:

  • GPS enabled device
  • Food and beverages in a cooler
  • Jack and spare tire
  • Jumper cables
  • Weather appropriate clothing and footwear
  • Cash
  • Entertainment for the road
  • Blankets
  • Flashlight
  • Device with a ton of music
  1. Check your car

Your car is not just your mode of transportation but where you will be spending a majority of your time. One of the worst things that could happen on a road trip would be a broken-down vehicle. Before you leave, make sure your car is in top shape. Has the oil change been done recently? Is the fuel tank full? Are all fluid levels full? Is a spare tire available? Etc.

  1. Know Where to Go (or Don’t!)

Before leaving, it is a good idea to know where you want to go. For some, having a route mapped out, with specific stops and hotels already planned, will make the most sense. Others prefer a more “go with the flow” perspective. Either way, make sure everyone on the trip is on the same page. If one person wants to stop at every detour that interests them and another wants to drive straight through to the next city, it can make for very long days.

If a first road is too frightening, it may be because you do not feel comfortable behind the wheel. If so, a driving course could give you the confidence and the right techniques for impeccable and safe driving.
